Scarborough Evening News reports........
The Cockleshell Cafe is a true community cafe. It is on Seamer
Road just before Falsgrave, by the side of St James' Church
and Community Art Centre.
The entrance is round the back of the art centre past a pretty
garden and boxes full of flowering plants. There is a yard with
a couple of old-type “school” tables and chairs
and again lovely flowers in trellis boxes on the walls. A short
flight of steps lead inside.
The interior is not very large with six or seven round tables.
Craft work was being done by two ladies at one of these; we
were told that Wednesday is craft day where if you wish you
can take along any art/craft/ knitting work. We agreed that
it seems a nice way of breaking the ice and getting to know
others if you are new to the area or live alone. Posters and
pictures are on a community notice board along with brochures,
one of which explains “Why the Cockleshell Cafe?”,
telling how the name came from St James, who is the patron saint
of pilgrims, and that they used to attach a scallop or cockleshell
as a badge of their pilgrimage.
